Venezuela V Paraguay

Saturday 10th October – 23:30 GMT

With Paraguay already through to the South African World Cup finals next summer, they may well go easy on Venezuela, a country still in the hunt for the remaining two qualifying positions. Venezuela are just two points off Ecuador, who occupy fourth position, and a win for them could see them reduce the deficit and possibly leapfrog the Ecuadorian in the process. Paraguay, on the other hand, have done all the hard work and they will just be playing for the nuisance factor, and to bolster their FIFA ranking.

Venezuela – Currently in seventh and they must win their remaining two qualifiers to realistically stay in the hunt for a South Africa berth. The fact that they are playing a Paraguay side already through should help their cause, although, their patchy home form leaves a lot to be desired and a big negative for the fans. They have won just four of eight home qualifiers, with three of those being defeats. Securing the right results at home is crucial if you want to enjoy a healthy qualifying campaign and without that Venezuela have faltered. However, they can turn it on when they want to and the incentive is certainly there for them to do just that on Sunday night.

Paraguay – The celebrations have already began, as well as the preparations of course. Paraguay are currently second in the table and have nothing at stake in this game. Unlike their match day opponents, they have enjoyed a successful qualifying campaign, losing just four times and conceding just 13 goals. Whether their hearts will be in this fixtures is the important question as they have nothing to play for here.

This is a fantastic, if not glorious, opportunity for Venezuela to keep their name firmly in the hat as they face an already qualified Paraguay. They will have the rapid support of the fans, although with that comes a whole heap of added pressure and expectations. Venezuela haven’t been in a situation like this for a long time now and this is somewhat of unknown territory for them.

Venezuela Home Record: 4-1-3

Goal Tally: 22-27

Paraguay Away Record: 2-3-3

Goal Tally: 22-13

Our Thoughts – With Paraguay already through, some may disregard the away side altogether. However, although the omen is on Venezuela to do the business, the pressure could get to them, as well as them having a patchy record at home in qualifying, all cumulate in a bad bet on the home side in our opinion. Paraguay look very good odds to make it ten wins in qualifying and dash Venezuelan hopes.
