Belgium v England- World Cup 2018

Belgium vs England World Cup Prediction 14th July 2018 – 3.00 p.m

After failed semi-final efforts, Belgium and England will meet in the third-place match on Saturday at the 2018 World Cup. Neither were really expected to have made it this far at the tournament having traded as dark horse underdogs ahead of the tournament. So they have both really exceeded the expectations at that was on them. This will be the second meeting between them at this tournament as they were paired up in the group stage in a match which neither really wanted to win. Hopefully, this will be a bit more of a contest.

Belgium vs England Odds*

Belgium 6/5
England 23/10

Who will win Belgium vs England?

The third-place match at the World Cup can often be tricky to call and that is because teams don’t always go with their strongest starting eleven and really it’s a match that no-one wants to be playing. So who will win Belgium v England and go home in third place from a tournament where a quarter-final berth for both was pretty much the expectation? It may well be the Red Devils who look as if they will have the edge over their European counterparts.

Red Devils hot and cold

The issues that Belgium seem to have in being able to consistently produce strong, cohesive performances came back to haunt them at the World Cup. They were brilliant in their quarter-final win over Brazil and if they could have played like that the rest of the way, they would probably have been winning the World cup. But that game against Brazil may well have been their peak and they were so flat against France in their semi-final 1-0 loss that it was night and day to how they played against Brazil. Granted France’s defence was much better than that of the South Americans, but for Belgium, who have scored so freely at the tournament to be shut down in that semi-final with all the momentum and confidence that they had behind them, was just strange. They couldn’t figure it out tactically. Still, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Belgium are a free-scoring side and we are going over 2.5 goals at 3/5 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from 12th July, 2018 at 6:12 pm) for this game.

Each of the last ten Third Place matches at World Cups have all gone above 2.5 goals. Belgium have lost only one of their last sixteen games, winning thirteen in that sequence so you can’t knock them too much. They have so much individual brilliance in their squad that they often find a way. Belgium have scored at least two goals in six of their last eight games played and at least three in five of those six. Romelu Lukaku was anonymous against France but is a 7/2 first goalscorer option for this fixture* (Betting Odds were taken from 12th July, 2018 at 6:12 p.m.) as he tries to make up ground on Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race. Belgium have seven clean sheets in their last eleven games plus they will have had that extra day of rest compared to England as well.

Can Three Lions pick themselves up?

In the end, it looked as if the semi-final of the World Cup was just a game too far for England. They faded badly in the second half of their loss against Croatia and just couldn’t find that extra gear they needed. Still, it has been a good tournament from them with plenty of positives to take away, like their defence and the goalscoring of Harry Kane. Most of the goals that England have netted have been from set plays and they haven’t looked good in terms of having creativity from open play. They don’t have that, but as England go into this needing to freshen things up, we will likely see the pack shuffled by Gareth Southgate and the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek could get a chance to shine. Because England seems to be a positive force from set plays, we are backing both teams to score at 8/15 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from 12th July, 2018 at 6:12 p.m.). This is at least a game without pressure and they go out and try and get some revenge over the Red Devils.

England have lost just one game since September last year, which was that weird game against Belgium at the end of the group stage, a game which neither was that interested in winning. England are just W1 D2 L1 (over 90 minutes) in their last four played at the World Cup. Harry Kane hasn’t scored since his spot-kick against Colombia in the round of sixteen, but he is the anytime goalscorer favourite at 20/21 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from 12th July, 2018 at 6:12 p.m.). The Three Lions have a good young defence to bank on for the future, but they have taken just one clean sheet this World Cup. But still, they have not conceded more than one goal in ninety minutes during any of their last sixteen games. Despite all of the heartbreak about missing out on a World Cup semi-final, England still have the chance to go home as the third-best team.

Belgium vs England Prediction

Belgium have far more attacking threat about them than their opponents do. England were out on their feet against Croatia after their semi-final and just haven’t created enough from open play to suggest that they can take down a Belgian side who are a free-scoring side on the day more often than not.
