Croatia v England - World Cup 2018

Croatia vs England World Cup Prediction 11th July 2018 – 7.00 p.m

England will go into their semi-final duel with Croatia at the 2018 World Cup as the favourites to move ahead to the showcase match. What a feat that would be for the Three Lions who started the tournament as nothing more than outsiders. Croatia though are going to be no pushover, although they have needed penalty kicks in both rounds of the knockout stages so far to progress. With England having a far more youthful setup and having completed their quarter final win over Sweden in 90 minutes, will the fresher legs of the Three Lions be a telling factor in who will win this Croatia v England showdown?

Croatia vs England Odds*

Who will win Croatia vs England?

Who will win this Croatia v England semi-final showdown? What an intense night this will be for England fans having seen their brave young team exceed expectations. This is the toughest game that they will have gotten in terms of the technical quality of the team lining up opposite them. But England are a much younger side than their opponents and that could just give them the edge in outlasting the Croatians.

Can Croatia sustain energy levels?

One of the big factors about this game could well be the energy levels. Croatia have been through extra time and penalty kicks in both knockout stage games so far at the 2018 World Cup. That will take a lot out of the legs of the players and it takes an emotional toll as well. You look at the bulk of Croatia’s side like Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic, they aren’t spring chickens, certainly not when you put them up against the young England side. So if Croatia can’t get this game done in 90 minutes then you would expect England to have more energy through the extra period. Under 2.5 goals at bet365 is at 1/2 odds* (betting odds taken on July 8th, 2018 at 7:56 pm) as this is a World Cup semi-final. You will have seen the performance levels of Croatia drop as well to what they were in the group stage, when they looked so good. They have looked a little laboured against both Denmark and Russia, not dominating their opponents like many would have expected them to do.

But they are in the semi finals, they have managed to stick in there and that says something. They are in decent form as well with a W4 D2 record in their last six (90 mins) but that is now back to back draws for them. They have also conceded in each of their last three games at the tournament as well so England should get their chances, particularly if they get at the Croats with pace. Croatia have netted at least two goals in five of their last six (extra time included) and they are arguably the ones with the better quality and technical ability of the two sides. Croatia have lost just the two games since the beginning of September last year. Croatia are 13/10 underdogs To Qualify* (Betting Odds were taken from July 8th, 2018 at 6:46 p.m.) and naturally aren’t going to be too wide open in this game. They lost their one and only previous World Cup semi-final, which was at France 1998.

Three Lions continue to impress

It has been a long time since we could say that England games at a World Cup have not been short of excitement. There was all the intense thrills of their duel with Colombia in the round of sixteen in which England progressed after winning their first ever World Cup penalty shootout. Then they held their composure well to bide their time and get the better of Sweden in the quarter finals to make it through to their third ever World Cup semi-final. England’s youth are standing up to be counted, especially across the back line and because Croatia have the better of the two midfields here, this will be something of a different test for the Three Lions. This is probably going to be tight and in the bet365 correct score market, the 1-1 draw is the shortest-priced option at 5/1 with an England 1-0 at 11/2* (Betting Odds were taken from July 8th, 2018 at 6:46 p.m.). Of them, the draw is tempting. England do have a keeper in Jordan Pickford who is on top of his game at the moment, which helps a lot.

They could be tighter back there and their 2-0 win over Sweden saw England get their first World Cup clean sheet of this tournament. Again, a lot of England’s young players like Pickford, Harry Maguire, John Stones and Kieran Trippier have really produced fine tournaments. They are still lacking the quality in the middle of the park, that spark of creativity that is going to open up teams during open play. It hasn’t happened for the Three Lions in open play but they have scored with 10 of their last 13 shots on target at the World Cup, so are certainly clinical when those chances come their way. Harry Kane looked a bit spent in the second half of their quarter-final against Sweden, but he goes as the 10/3 first goalscorer favourite* (Betting Odds were taken from July 8th, 2018 at 6:46 p.m.) and they do need to get their captain into the game more. England are holding a W4 D1 L1 record in their last six games with them having lost just one of their last fifteen since the start of September. They have every chance of creating a bit of history for themselves.

Croatia vs England Prediction

The draw in the match outright has the most appeal for us, as well as that 1-1 correct score at the end of the day. If this does go to extra time though, England will probably be the stronger of the two sides, being younger and slightly fresher. But this is going to be a tense World Cup semi-final and it may just be a case of them cancelling each other out, with England struggling in midfield but Croatia locking down the back, worried about England’s pace.
