Will England turn to Adam Johnson and Andy Carroll for support roles?

Can Andy Carroll and Adam Johnson play their respective ways into the England World Cup squad for Brazil 2014? An interesting question, and based on performances for their clubs over the weekend in the Premier League, punters may be fancying an outside shot on them to make the grade. There is still enough of the domestic season left to play their way into contention.

England boss Roy Hodgson will already have a pretty solid picture of who he wants to take to Brazil with him, as the Three Lions face Uruguay, Costa Rica and Italy in their group. But as always, there is always room for a form player to muscle their way into the picture and that seems to be what Adam Johnson in particular, is determined to do.

Sunderland’s Johnson is playing some tremendous football at the moment, direct football, taking on defenders and has his eye in for goal at the moment. He is definitely an impact player who could come off the bench and make a big impact for England in Brazil. If Johnson keeps playing the way he is at the moment until the end of the season, then he could have a real shot of making the England squad.

Online betting site William Hill paid big notice to the Black Cats man as they  trimmed odds on on Johnson to 6/1 from 9/1 to make the trip to Brazil 2014 with England in the summer.

So what about Andy Carroll? The big striker displays some characteristics that the Three Lions may need to call upon to get through their tough World Cup group. A willingness to fight for the cause, and the ability to mix it up aerially and on the deck. He set up Kevin Nolan to score twice in West Ham’s crucial 2-0 home win over Swansea in the Premier League on the weekend. West Ham have been lacking that grit all season, and like Johnson, he could be a good option to throw on as substitute.

But Carroll needs to keep performing and he really needs to find some goals to get fully in the picture to join England’s cause at the 2014 World Cup. If he had big ambitions of reaching Brazil 2014, he didn’t do himself any favours as he was shown a red card red for violent conduct and now has to face a ban for the next three matches. That fiery temperament needs to be curtailed so he is not seen as liability, and the missed matches and chances to impress could hurt him big time.
