INTRODUCTION:  1978 World Cup winning captain.

1978 World Cup - Argentina
Passarella won his first cap under Menotti shortly after the 1974 World Cup and was named captain for the 1978 tournament.  Playing as a center-back, Passarealla never waste an opportunity to join the attack.  His powerful headers and shots were a constant threat to opposing teams. Passarella played his greatest match of the series in the Final against Holland.  In the first half alone, he launched four attacks at the Dutch goal, coming close at two occasions.  With Passarella a driving force and Kempes the hammer, Argentina defeated Holland after extra-time and won the World Cup for the first time in their history.

1982 World Cup - Spain
Unlike Kempes and Ardiles, Passarella maintained his form at the 1982 World Cup and shone even brighter than four years ago.  In the run-up to the tournament, he led the teams' scoring with 13 goals in 30 games.  He was perhaps the team's only star at this World Cup.  In the second round against Italy, Passarella scored with a superbly taken free-kick, curling a bannana shot past Dino Zoff.  This gave Argentina brief hope and his header late in the match almost tied the game.

Passarella was the only Argentine that shone at the World Cup in Spain

Four years later, the veteran Passarella was again included in the squad but did not play a single match as Maradona reclaimed the world title for Argentina.

1st round: 3rd match v. El Salvador
