OBDULIO VARELA

BORN:  SEP. 20, 1917
COUNTRY: Uruguay
WORLD CUP APPEARANCES:  2 tournaments ('50, '54)
CLUBS: Wanderers, Penarol

INTRODUCTION: One of the greatest captains in World Cup history.

1950 World Cup - Brazil
Varela has been an international for an incredible 14 years since he made his international debut at 23. In 1950, aged 33, the infatigable Varela inspired a stunning World Cup victory.  Varela was most famous for the part he played in the triumph over the Brazilian team.  As a center-half, he was the key player in both defense and attack, organising the whole team to play to his command.  One of the famous stories about him was that he deliberately held the ball and complained to the referee after the Brazilians scored the goal.  But after the game, he denied that such a move was to disturb the rythym of the Brazilian players.
1954 World Cup - England
Still a driving force at center-half at the age of 37, again captained his country in the 1954 World Cup.  He was outstanding against the Scotland team and even scored a goal against England.  In the semi-finals, with Varela injured and sidelined, Uruguay lost to the Magical Magyars, their first ever defeat in the World Cup.  Varela retired from playing immmediately after the tournament.
