1978 World Cup - Argentina
At 22, Rossi made his World Cup debut in 1978. He made a big impression, scoring 3 goals, including the winning goal against Austria. Rossi thus helped Italy to finish fourth in the tournament and was hailed as one of the brightest prospect.

His involvement in the match-fixing scandal inthe Italian league meant that he had to serve a ban and did not play in the league again until April of 1982, only two months before the World Cup inSpain. He was selected for the national team and did not score in the first four games.
