ROBERTO RIVELINO

BORN:  JAN. 1, 1946
COUNTRY: Brazil
WORLD CUP APPEARNCES:  17 games in 3 tournaments ('70, '74, '78)
CLUBS: Corinthians, Fluminese
INTRODUCTION: Three-time World Cup player and one of the world's greatest in the seventies.
CAREER INTERNATIONAL GOALS: 26 in 94 games
1970 World Cup - Mexico
Rivelino was a member of the lengendary 1970 World Cup winning team, famous for his powerful left-foot shots and superb ability from free-kicks.
In 1970, at the age of 23, he was considered not fit enough to last the full 90 minutes at central midfield.  Zagallo moved him to play as in the attacking midfield position on the far left.  With less defensive duties than Gerson and Clodoaldo, Rivelino excelled in the new position, scoring 3 goals in 7 games.  It was Rivelino who scored Brazil's first goal of the competition with one of his celebrated free-kicks.  Afterwards, he continued to torment opposing defenses and link perfectly with Tostao.

1974 World Cup - West Germany
WORLD FAMOUS
Rivelino succeeded fellow Brazilian Didi as the world's most feared free-kick expert.
After the retirement of Pele, Rivelino succeeded his number 10 shirt and was the main player for the Brazilian team in 1974.  Even without most of his illustrious teammates of the 1970 team, Rivelino still showed his class and produced a few moments of magic.  With Brazil in the danger of going out of the tournament after two successive goalless draws, Rivelino inspired the national team with his playmaking and goal-scoring skills.

Against Zaire, he thumped a superb shot past an amazed African goalkeeper.  In the game against East Germany, he blasted a thunderous shot past the defensive wall and the goalkeeper.  Against Argentina, Rivelino scored with a ferocious low drive outside of the area.  But against Holland, the best team of 1974, the loss of Pele, Tostao and Gerson was too much for Rivelino to compensate and Brazil lost the match and also its crown.

1978 World Cup - Argentina
Four years later, he was again selected to travel to Argentina but did not play in every game.  He was used in the first round matches but only appear in only one second-phase game and as a substitute.  However, aginst Itlay in the 3rd place in the play-off, he inspired Brazil to a victory, making the coach's decision to use him so sparingly difficult to justify.
