ROMARIO

REAL NAME:  ROMARIO DE SOUZA FARIA
BORN:  JAN. 29, 1966
COUNTRY: Brazil
WORLD CUP APPEARNCES:  2
CLUBS: Vasco da Gama, PSV Eindhoven, Bareclona, Flamengo, Valencia, Flamengo

INTRODUCTION: The best player in the 1994 World Cup.

1990 World Cup - Italy
Romario was already a household name in his early twenties.  But a broken leg in the Dutch league costed him a place in the starting line-up in Italia '90.  So he only played 60 minutes in a first round game against Scotland.

1994 World Cup - USA Three years later, the controversial star's insistence for a place in the starting line-up prompted coach Carlos Pereira to neglect him for the qualifying campaign.  But poor results prompted a recall in the final match against Uruguay and Romario responded with a stunning display and two goals which guarantee a place in USA '94.

Romario continued his good form and scored 5 goals at the 1994 World Cup, helping Brazil to win the trophy for a record fourth time.  He was credited as the greatest hero in Brazil's triumph, their first since Pele's team 24 years ago.  He scored one goal in each of the 3 first round games.  Against USA in the second round, he provided the cruial assist in Brazil's winning goal, scored by Bebeto.  Against Holland, Romario scored a brilliant volley in their 3-2 triumph.

NATIONAL HERO
Romario played a major role in Brazil's first World Cup victory in 24 years.

In the semi-final gainst Sweden, Romario casually dribbled Ravelli, the famous goalkeeper, only to be let down by his own arrogance.  Not looking up before shooting, his casual shot was cleared off the goal-line.  With Brazil dominating the game but could not make the breakthrough,  Romario finally came to the rescue, outjumping the towering Swedish defence to head in a Jorginho cross.  Italy's water-tight defence shut out Romario and Bebeto's striking partnership.  But Brazil won the Final on penalties,  with Romario one of the 4 penalty takers used.

Four years later, Romario was named to the Brazilian squad to defend their title.  But unfortunately at the eve of the tournament, his injury forced Zagallo to drop him from the team in what might have been his third World Cup.
