1990 World Cup - Italy
Schillaci was the most unlikely top-scorer in World Cup history. A World Cup victory on home soil was anticipated by the Italian public and everyone expected the Azzuri to excel. They did so against Austria in the first game, creating chances after chances but still could not find a way to the opening goal. the little-known Schillaci was then brought on from the substitute bench and he scored with a header after just 4 minutes on the field !

UNCONTAINABLE
No defense could contain an inspired Schillaci at the 1990 World Cup |
With Gianluca Vialli off-form, Italian coach Vicini brought Roberto Baggio in attack in the third game. Schillaci immediately established a lethal partnership with Baggio, each getting one goal against Czechoslovakia. Schillaci then score in every round thereafter, which included strikes against Uruguay, Ireland and Argentina and the third place playoff against England. His six goals made him the tournament's top-scorer, ahead of Czechoslovakia's Skuhravy. He became a national hero for his '90 heroics but quickly faded at club level and was never recalled by the national team.
