Egypt were pretty comfortable in coming through their World Cup qualification campaign and now it is back on to the world stage for them to try and impress. They have a superstar within their ranks and that is Liverpool’s prolific scorer Mo Salah. What kind of impact will he be able to have at the World Cup? Will he carry his domestic form over onto the big stage?

How Egypt qualified

The qualification process in the CAF is not really that long of an ordeal. It starts in the second round of action when the top 27 ranked teams join up with 13 first round qualifiers. It is just a straight two-legged play off situation in the second round. In it, Egypt were up against Chad and they took a comfortable 4-1 aggregate win so that first stage was safely navigated and that put them through the third round of qualification, namely the group.

In it, they were drawn against Uganda, Ghana and Congo. That was a competitive group that they had to get themselves through and they did it pretty comfortably in the end. They took a W4 D1 L1 record, winning all three matches on home soil and their only slip up coming away at Congo (who finished bottom). So it was all comfortable enough for them and they took three clean sheets in those six games along the way too.

How much of an influence was Mo Salah? He was top scorer in the group with five of Egypt’s eight goals. So he was a big influence.

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

They can easily make a run at qualification from their group at the World Cup 2018. They are in Group A alongside Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and host nation Russia. Egypt are 6/1 odds at bet365* (Betting Odds taken at 4:06 p.m. on April 11th, 2018) to win the group which is a long shot basically because of Uruguay. However, at 6/4 odds with Bet365* (Betting Odds taken at 4:06 p.m. on April 11th, 2018) to qualify then that is fully worth considering for your World Cup.

Egypt opens with what is their most difficult game as they take on South Americans Uruguay who are favourites to win the group. A point out of that for the Africans would be a huge bonus going forward. It is in their second match which Egypt can make their shot at qualification as they take on Russia. Russia looks very poor, one-paced and a bit devoid of quality and there is no reason why Egypt cannot take them down. Even though the Russians are favourites for that meeting, Egypt at 15/4 odds* (Betting Odds taken at 4:06 p.m. on April 11th, 2018) are worth a poke.

Then they get their shot against Saudi Arabia to finish off their group stage campaign with and that should end up in their most routine results. So there is every chance that Egypt will be booking their place in the round of sixteen.

2018 World Cup Odds*

Germany 9/2, Brazil 4/1, France 13/2, Spain 6/1, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 11/1, England 18/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 33/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 40/1, Poland 50/1, bar 100/1* (Betting Odds taken at 4:06 p.m. on April 11th, 2018)

Egypt World Cup History

Three times before Egypt have been in the World Cup so they don’t have a great pedigree really at this stage of things. Their first ever appearance was in the 1934 edition when they went home in the first stage and then it was a long wait through to 1990 before they made it back for their second appearance. The same fate awaited them there as well as they went home in the group stage with two points on the board.

So 2018 will be just their third appearance on the world stage and they will be looking for their first ever World Cup match win as well having gone D2 L2 from their four previous matches in the competition (they played only one match in the 1934 edition).

Egypt Predictions

There is a good chance that he will be representing for Africa in the Round of 16. There is every chance that they can get through this group stage trial. While Uruguay are going to be tough opposition for them to handle, there’s no reason why Egypt can’t be positive against an average looking Russia and then there is a winnable match to finish off with against Saudi Arabia. With the help of Mo Salah, a 9/4 shot with bet365* (Betting Odds taken at 4:06 p.m. on April 11th, 2018) at a round of sixteen exit in the stage of elimination market has to be worth considering for Egypt.
