Peru battled through that congested and dramatic finish in CONMEBOL to get through to the World Cup. They have to come through an inter-confederation play off first though. They are a tough, battling side, but they do play to their advantage on home soil high in the Andes, but how will they fare out in Russia?

How Peru qualified

Peru were pretty solid through their qualification campaign really and the most surprising thing about them was the number of goals that they racked up. Only the top two of Brazil and Uruguay scored more goals in the CONMEBOL qualification campaign than Peru did. However, in among all that they were awarded a 3-0 win as Bolivia fielded an ineligible player against them. It was a match that Peru had initially lost 2-0.

So that was a slice of luck for them and Peru finished with a W7 D5 L6 record from their campaign. They did beat Argentina and hold Uruguay and Colombia to draws on home soil in their campaign. Peru is a tough place to go to for opposing teams and they struggled once they got out on the road taking one point only from their four away games against those who finished above them, failing to score in those games.

Defensively they weren’t steady at all at the back and it would have been worse if that Bolivia result had stood. They went up against New Zealand in the inter-confederation play off and after a 0-0 draw in the first leg away in Wellington, they made it count back on home soil in Lima. Again, they are well conditioned to the difficult conditions at home, they may not be quite the force out in Russia.

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

Peru will be in Group C at the 2018 World Cup alongside France, Australia and Denmark. They get an opener against Denmark on June 16th which they are 13/5 underdogs at bet365 for* (betting odds taken on April 3rd, 2018 at 00:49 a.m.). There are certainly more difficult groups that they could have found themselves in, but they will really need to start with getting at least a point out of that game.

They go on to the face France in their second match and that is a game which they are going to have big problems in trying to get a victory in. So they could be going into their final match, their most winnable one against the Socceroos pretty much down and out. Both France and Denmark look strong enough to have nailed down the qualification places before the final round of matches, so this one may just be about pride.

Peru are 2/1 second-favourites* (betting odds taken on April 3rd, 2018 at 00:35 a.m.) behind Australia to finish bottom of the group and if you fancied them somewhere along the lines being able to pull out enough points to get through to the next round then that is at 9/4 odds* (betting odds taken on April 3rd, 2018 at 00:35 a.m.).

2018 World Cup Odds*

Brazil 4/1, Germany 9/2, France 13/2, Spain 6/1, Argentina 10/1, Belgium 11/1, England 18/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 33/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 40/1, Russia 40/1, Poland 50/1* (betting odds taken on April 3rd, 2018 at 00:35 a.m.)

Peru World Cup History

Peru have been to the World Cup four times before and they were there in the very first edition in 1930 when they lost both games. They had to wait 40 years until 1970 to make another appearance at the tournament and they actually got to the quarter finals where they lost against Brazil. Eight years later they were back again.

In the first round of action they collected a W2 D1 record from their matches, then in the second round, they lost all three of their games (against Brazil Poland and Argentina). They made an appearance in 1982 as well and they collected two draws and a loss. Overall then their World Cup record is W4 D3 L8.

Peru Predictions

It is unlikely that Peru are going to get past the group stage at all. Their defence just isn’t good enough to suggest that they can pick up the points to do that. They may be able to go home on a positive note by digging out a win over Australia but that is probably going to be their lot. Peru to exit at the group stage is 3/10 odds with bet365* (betting odds taken on April 3rd, 2018 at 00:35 a.m.)
