Switzerland put together a pretty impressive qualification campaign to get to Russia 2018. Will the kind of form that they showed there be able to carry them past the group stage in the summer though? They have a tough group challenge ahead of them, including an opener that everyone wanted to avoid, namely taking on Brazil.

How Switzerland qualified

The Swiss had to make it through the World Cup qualifications play offs to get to Russia in the summer. They were actually in the driving seat for most of their Group B campaign thanks to a blistering start having won all of their opening nine including a victory over group favourites Portugal. But it then all boiled down to their final match, the second meeting with Portugal, this time away from home.

It was all on the line, the Swiss only needed to get out of that with a draw but in the 41st minute, it came unravelled for Switzerland as Johan Djourou scored an own goal to give Portugal the lead just before half time. The Swiss never recovered, lost 2-0 and then had to settle for second place on goal difference in the group to Portugal. It was looking like a huge opportunity missed for them.

But then they did manage to make amends as they went to the World Cup qualification play off round and earned progress through to Russia 2018 with a 1-0 aggregate win over Northern Ireland.

2018 World Cup Group Stage

What lies ahead for them in Russia 2018? A tough group is what. They got the short end of the stick really as they have to go up against Brazil which means that their chances of getting out as the group winners are limited. Switzerland will go against the Selecao in their opener on June 17th so at least we’ll have a chance to build on results after that. Their second match is a tricky one though with that having been said, as they will face Serbia.

Serbia topped a tough group in qualification, quite impressive at times and even though they will be the underdogs against the Swiss, they will likely make it difficult for the Swiss. If Switzerland have lost their opener against Brazil there will be huge pressure on them as Serbia will have been expected to have beaten Costa Rica in their opener.

Switzerland’s most manageable, winnable match will be against Costa Rica in their final group stage match. It’s not the easiest of groups for the Swiss and it’s not the easiest run of fixtures as they would have liked to have met Brazil last. But they have to deal with what is in front of them. Even though they are 6/1 second favourites at Bet365 to win* (betting odds taken on March 21st, 2018 at 10:44 p.m.) the group there is going to be value on them qualifying.

Their key players are going to be the likes of Granit Xhaka, Haris Seferovic and Xherdan Shaqiri. They can field a really energetic, positive attacking side if they want to and they looked quite a dynamic side in their qualifiers. Can they translate that over to the big stage, or will they, as we have seen them do before, go back into their shell?

Germany 9/2, Brazil 9/2, France 6/1, Spain 15/2, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 12/1, England 16/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 25/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 33/1, bar 40/1* (betting odds taken on March 21st, 2018 at 10:44 p.m.)

Switzerland World Cup History

This will be the ninth appearance in the World Cup finals for Switzerland whose first came back in 1934 when they went to the quarter finals. That is the stage which they have never been past before. Russia 2018 will be their fourth straight appearance in the World Cup finals. In Germany 2006 and Brazil 2014 they went home at the round of sixteen, while sandwiched in between that they were knocked out of the Group Stage at South Africa 2010. From 33 previous World Cup matches, Switzerland are W11 D6 L16.

Switzerland Predictions

Based on their performance in qualification it’s fair to say that the Swiss should be able to enjoy a decent World Cup. Looking back at their qualification group though, Portugal aside, it was one of the weaker groups out there. The game against Serbia is likely going to make or break their campaign and a four point haul for them as a minimum has to be a target, but even though they will get a tough game against Serbia, they should be able to drive out a win. The Swiss do look quite positive and a stage of sixteen exit looks about right for them.
