World Cup Yellow Cards for Penalty Kick Feints

The International Football Association Board and FIFA have been laying down the law ahead of the World Cup, as they have stopped players feinting to kick the ball while taking a penalty. There is so much pressure, so much at stake on World Cup Fixtures, that a penalty can make or break games. Whether it is a penalty awarded in regulation time, or whether it is a World Cup knockout match which goes to a shoot-out, the stakes in football could not be higher. Much has been made of penalty takers using feints as extra tricks to put off the opposing goalkeeper, who the odds are already stacked against in the one-on-one situation. The new ruling, which comes into effect for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, does not stop players from pausing during their run up, but if they feign when going to kick the ball, they will earn themselves a yellow card. The kick will also have to be re-taken, whatever the outcome of the illegal kick.
