Argentina vs Iceland World Cup 2018 Preview 16th June – 2.00 p.m
(Full time: 1:1 – goals: Agüero 19′ – Finnbogason 23′)

Argentina’s patience may well get tested in this one as they face up to Iceland in their Group D opener. Group D at the 2018 World Cup looks one of the tightest and so there may not be much room for error at all. Argentina will be facing a resilient side in Iceland, who impressed so much at Euro 2016 and in topping their World Cup 2018 qualification group. Will the underdogs be able to have another great day? Here are our Argentina v Iceland predictions.

Argentina vs Iceland Preview

Argentina are one of the expected front-runners to win the 2018 World Cup and four years ago they made it all the way to the final where ultimately they failed to prevail against Germany. They didn’t have the most impressive of qualification campaigns, barely averaging over a goal per fixture and that is why punters have not had much fear about opposing them with Croatia in Group D at the 2018 World Cup. But this fixture should allow the Albiceleste to get off to a comfortable start in their campaign as they are facing and Iceland side who are in no form at the moment.

High scoring game coming?

In looking at Argentina v Iceland predictions this actually may be a fixture which surprises and produces a good chunk of goals. The reasoning for that is that Iceland’s last four games have all ended over 2.5 goals and three of Argentina’s last four have gone over the goal line as well. So because of that over 2.5 goals at bet 365 is definitely worth considering at 21/20 odds* (betting odds taken on June 11, 2018, at 7:20 p.m.) just for a shot at a little bit of value. Also, Argentina have scored at least two goals in three of their last four games and are currently on a six-match scoring streak.

Argentina may not be the most explosive side going forward and they tend to err on the side of caution, but they have the individual brilliance in the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala to produce the necessary goods. Lionel Messi is the 11/5 odds first goalscorer favourite* (betting odds taken on June 11, 2018 at 7:20 p.m.) at bet365. Argentina have posted a W4 D3 L2 record in their last nine games, but both defeats that they suffered in that sequence happened in their last four games. one of them was against Nigeria who are going to be Group D opponents at this World Cup.

Iceland enter their World Cup debut

After beating Croatia to top spot in their World Cup 2018 qualification group Iceland will be making their debut in the tournament. It is a pretty tough introduction to the World Cup in having to take on the South Americans. Iceland have played their way to great relative success over the last couple of years however they don’t look a tremendous option to pull off a shock result in this World Cup fixture. Indeed our Argentina v Iceland predictions are struggling to see anything other than a win for Argentina and that is because Iceland are out of form. Badly so in fact.

Iceland have produced only a W1 D2 L4 record in their last seven games in their defence has been all over the place conceding heavily. Iceland have conceded 11 goals in their last four games alone and in three of those fixtures, they conceded exactly 3 goals. In their final warm-up match ahead of the tournament they could only manage a 2-2 draw against Ghana. But the one positive that you can take from their current form is that they have been scoring and actually scored in eight of their last nine games. But they do look very vulnerable at the back and you are looking at 6/4 odds on the bet365 both teams to score option* (betting odds taken on June 11, 2018 at 7:20 p.m.).

Argentina v Iceland Predictions

We don’t see Iceland producing enough to go and cause an upset in this one. Their defence hasn’t been very good lately and if that’s not there then they are going to struggle at this World Cup. Argentina had been far from perfect, but they have the quality to get the job done here and back to Argentina to win with a clean sheet.
