Is there a chance of England making the 2018 World Cup final? Of course there is, there is always a chance, the three Lions are in it, they are fully in the mix and with Gareth Southgate taking a young squad with him, levels of optimism have been raised just a little bit. Realistically though England don’t have huge expectations of actually winning the tournament, but it is always nice to dream and who knows, because they’ve done it once before!

England group stage

England knows what lies ahead for them in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup and that is fixtures against Tunisia, Panama and then Belgium. The Three Lions have to be pretty happy with their group stage draw and even though they have to take on Belgium (who are the best underdog option to win the title outright), the layout of the group actually affords England a wonderful chance of securing comfortable passage through to the knockout stage of the competition.

England are 11/8 second favourites at bet365* (Betting Odds taken at 4:37 p.m. on May 30th, 2018) to win Group G, with Belgium at 5/6 odds-on* (Betting Odds taken at 4:37 p.m. on May 30th, 2018). That’s a pretty fair assessment of the status of the two nations, because Belgium are far more of a settled side and arguably they do have better depth running through the squad. As for England, Gareth Southgate is still trying to mould them into something great, and he is doing that by selecting young players who have carried form throughout their domestic seasons, which is a refreshing change.

England are odds-on favourites to beat both Tunisia and then Panama in the group stage matches. Heading into the World Cup the one thing about England’s chances is that they have been struggling in front of goal. Even though Southgate has put out a more positive formation, and has tried to instill a more positive mindset during his time in charge, England are just a little bit on the goal-shy side of things. But realistically against the defences of Tunisia Panama at the 2018 World Cup, England should be able to create plenty of chances.

Getting some good goal scoring momentum going could be hugely important for them as well, in terms of winning the group. Both England and Belgium should win their respective opening fixtures before their clash on June 28 in the final round of group stage fixtures. So going into that one, if England can create a situation where they have a better goal difference them Red Devils, that would afford England the luxury of just needing to draw that final game in order to win the group. So the message should be, attack!

England round of 16

You look at who England could go up against in the first knockout stage of the World Cup 2018 and you will be left scratching your head just a little bit. They would be going up against either Poland, Senegal, Columbia or Japan. Given how things look it is not likely to be Japan and Poland and Colombia are the two favourites to qualify from what is Group H.

How much would you fancy England’s chances against one of those two?

You would have to feel that the Three Lions would be evenly matched against Poland, although they would have to be on their defensive toes to try and keep Robert Lewandowski quiet. Colombia are not looking anything like a particularly threatening side going into the 2018 World Cup and again you would hope that England would be at least evenly matched against the South Americans. Surprisingly you get the feeling that it is Senegal who would trouble England most if they were to squeeze through, just because of their pace and directness.

England quarter-finals

Looking at the draw and England’s chances at the 2018 World Cup, the alarm bells will be ringing at the quarter-final stage. If things go to plan in terms of strong favourites winning their groups, England would be either up against Brazil or Germany in the quarter-final stage which would immediately put a dampener on optimism. If that is the scenario which plays out then England are going to be heavy underdogs against either of those.

The best England can really hope for would be for one of them to win their group and the other one to finish second because that would create a Germany versus Brazil scenario in the round of 16 which could open up the draw for the Three Lions. But realistically, how likely is that to happen with both Germany and Brazil strong favourites to win their respective groups? You have to think that realistically England cannot avoid major trouble ahead in the knockout stages if they want to win the World Cup. An England quarter-final stage of elimination bet at bet365 is at 5/2 odds* (Betting Odds taken at 4:37 p.m. on May 30th, 2018).

It’s really hard to plan beyond the quarter-finals for England’s chances at the 2018 World Cup. It’s not that they can’t get there, but they are going to have to create something special and probably beyond their current station to get there. But looking at what is ahead anything less than a quarter-final place, which is a stage at which things are going to get really tough for the Three Lions, would be a bit of a disappointment.

There is an early group stage confidence booster potentially ahead by them topping Belgium, and while they should have a manageable round of 16 tie, you would have to worry about their chances in the quarter-finals. Along the way, fully back Harry Kane at 5/4 odds with bet365* (Betting Odds taken at 4:37 p.m. on May 30th, 2018) to be England’s top goalscorer at the tournament.
