France vs Australia World Cup 2018 Preview 16th June – 11.00 p.m
(Full time: 2:1 – goals: Griezmann 58′ (P), Pogba 81′ – Jedinak 62′ (P) )

France will be expected to roll up on Saturday and collect three points to get their World Cup 2018 group stage campaign underway. It is expected that this will be something of a comfortable opener for them, but the French did struggle against the USA in their final warm-up match ahead of the tournament. Meanwhile, Australia boosted their confidence before heading off to Russia 2018 with back-to-back wins over European opposition. Can they dig in there and frustrate the French? Here is a look at our France v Australia predictions.

France vs Australia Preview

The French will be aiming for three comfortable points in this opener at the 2018 World Cup. They had a bit of an off day at the office, particularly in defence as they could only manage a 1-1 home draw against the USA on the weekend. So no great disaster of course and France have only taken the one defeat in their last 10 games, winning six of those 10. The French are heading to the World Cup as one of the front-runners based on the amount of talent that they have in their squad (which on paper is just ridiculously good). One area they need to improve though is in defence.

French defensive wobbles

France have conceded in five of their last six games and you have an option of 7/4 odds at bet365* (betting odds taken on June 11 at 6:30 p.m.) for both teams to score here. That is appealing in France v Australia predictions given the number of goals that France have conceded recently. There is little doubt about their attacking ability and leading the line for them is Golden Boot hopeful Antoine Griezmann who is at 10/3 odds* (betting odds taken on June 11th at 6:11 pm) in the bet365 first goalscorer market.

France have not had a problem putting the ball in the back of the net recently having netted in seven of their last eight games. They have scored at least two goals in all but one of those seven. Another thing to consider is the amount pressure that is on France’s shoulders as they are not only favourites to win their group, but they are expected to at least be in the semi finals given the abundance of talent that they have. That could lead to some nerves in this opener and they will need to not underestimate Australia. Another interesting France v Australia prediction is a draw/France half time full-time bet is that 5/2 odds* (betting odds taken on June 11th at 6:11 p.m.).

Socceroos improving form

That is because the form of Australia has actually improved since booking qualification for the 2018 World Cup. So that makes things interesting in this opener. Australia only finished second in the qualification group and had to go through not only an AFC playoff round but also and inter-confederation play-off round. They scrapped and battled their way through at times but got there in the end but it wasn’t overly convincing from them. So at that time they never looked as if they would be a major threat to France and while they’re still underdogs here, their current form makes this a little more interesting.

So what is going on with Australia? They are undefeated in three games, winning their last two back-to-back and they were against half-decent European opposition in the Czech Republic and Hungary. It was a big 4-0 win that they took over the Czech Republic and before that, they have played out a 0-0 draw against World Cup-bound Columbia. So will they prove to be a handful for the French to deal with in this game? A  France 2-1 correct score option at bet365 is at 17/2 odds* (betting odds taken on June 11th at 6:11 pm). At some point in the tournament France’s mental toughness will come into question, will happen in this opener?

France v Australia Predictions

Australia are underdogs in this fixture for reason, but they are a side who work hard even if the degree of quality is not quite there. They can take some heart from their recent results and France may well have to be patient. Les Bleus may ultimately have to rely on options from the bench later on in the game. Our prediction is to expect a win for the French, but not without a fight, so look for a draw/France half time/full-time result.
