(Full time: 3:3 – goals: Ronaldo 4´, 44´, 88´ – Costa 24´, 55´ Nacho 58´)

This is an interesting fixture coming up from Group B at the 2018 World Cup as it features Spain who are one of the tournament front-runners, taking on the reigning European champions and neighbours, Portugal. So this is a little bit of a heavyweight clash early on in the group stage and it will be interesting to see if the Spaniards can come up with the creativity to break down what is likely to be a conservative display from their Iberian rivals.

Portugal vs Spain Preview

This is without a doubt one of the biggest games of the group stage at Russia 2018 with the reigning European champions Portugal taking on their Iberian rivals Spain. Portugal are underdogs fixture and in their last six games played they are W2 D3 L1. One of the wins in a sequence did happen on the weekend as they beat Algeria 3-0 in their final warm-up match and it gave them back-to-back clean sheets as well as they head to the 2018 World Cup. That will be an extra boost for them them considering they had conceded in each of their four previous games prior to that. It is unlikely Portugal will come out and play an expansive attacking game and therefore under 2.5 goals at bet365 is at 4/7 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) and a sensible proposition. The problem for Portugal is going to be getting enough of the ball and trying to find enough pace on the break to hurt the Spaniards at the back when they do.

Can Portugal rediscover Euro 2016 form?

You only have to think back to their successful Euro 2016 campaign where Portugal muddled their way through the tournament drawing six of their seven fixtures across 90 min. So it is hard to back them to actually record a victory in this one which would set them up to win the group. After meeting with the Spaniards, Portugal will then go on to face Morocco and Iran so there is still a solid chance of them progressing even if they weren’t to get the better of their neighbours on Friday. You’re only going to be looking at one man in the goalscoring markets for Portugal and that is, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo who is at 15/8 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) in the bet365 anytime goalscorer market. The best backup option for him is Andre Silva but still, Ronaldo is expected to be their top goalscorer at the tournament.

Are the Red Fury back to their best?

Remember the tremendous squad that Spain had at the 2010 World Cup when they got their hands on the title for the first time ever? Well, this one looks on par to that and almost unrecognisable from the one four years ago which blew their lines badly in their title defence by crashing out in the group stage. There is much more harmony around this time, they have a new boss and they have their quality youngsters fully blended into the squad. They look mightily strong once again in the midfield area where you can expect them to control possession of the ball for long periods of this opening fixture that they are going to be playing at Russia 2018. The La Roja looks a real threat to go all the way and win the title this year and if they are going to get that they are going to need Diego Costa leading the line with his usual aggressive force. Costa is the 13/8 odds favourite* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) in the bet365 anytime goalscorer market for their opener against Portugal.

It is interesting after having to deal with the Netherlands in their 2014 opener that Spain get another top European opponent to open with this time around. It looks as if their fortunes in this one could be a lot better than it was against the Dutch and a Spain 1-0 success is at 9/2 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) in the bet365 correct score market. If they are going to get across the line and pick up maximum points then it’s not likely to be by a big margin just because of how frustrating Portugal can be, so Spain to win by a one-goal margin is a decent proposition to consider at 15/8 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) to win to nil.

Portugal v Spain Predictions

Portugal are not an expansive side and they will try for as long as they can to frustrate Spain. Spaniards are likely to control a huge chunk of possession in this picture and it may just all boil down to whether or not they can come up with a craft to prise open the defence of Portugal. Given how while they have played in 2018 is probably worth backing them to do so. Spain to win.
