Sven-Goran Eriksson has put his name firmly in the hat to become the manager of Ivory Coast at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The two parties have been involved in talks, but as of yet, no decision as to who will lead the Elephants in South Africa come June 11th, has been made. Former England manager Eriksson, is keen to get back to the World Cup after attending two with England in 2002 and 2006. Sven had a stint behind the scenes at Notts County, before stepping away from them, and so is available in the summer. The Swede however, is not the only name to be linked with the African nation, which is considered to be the strongest at the competition, which is historically being held on the African continent for the first time in history.

The Ivory Coast are looking for a manager, after they sacked previous boss Vahid Halilhodzic earlier in the year. The Ivory Coast, who were favourites to win the African Cup of Nations, failed to perform on the pitch, looking like individual stars playing together instead of a team. They failed to get to the final, and that cost Halilhodzic his job. Now the Elephants are biding their time in installing a new man at the helm. The usual names like Guus Hiddink, Mark Hughes and Eriksson have been touted around, but it is Bernd Schuster and Philippe Troussier who appear to be genuine front runners for the position. Who they will plump for remains to be seen, as they have an option to get hired help just for the world cup, or they may want to secure a long term manager for stability.

Whoever takes over as manager will have a tough time at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Ivory Coast were drawn in the same group as Brazil and Portugal, and there is no margin for error for them. They open their World Cup 2010 account against Portugal, in a match which is thought to be the decider for the runner’s up spot behind Brazil in the group. This will be the second visit of the Ivory Coast to the World Cup, their last appearance in 2006 was also in a tough group along with Argentina and Holland, against which, the Africans lost both matches, eliminating them. The decisive game for the Ivory Coast is the high pressured opener against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Who will be the manager charged with seeing the Elephants through this tough World Cup test? The answer is exepcted to come on Friday.
