Sweden v England- World Cup 2018

Sweden vs England World Cup Prediction 7th July 2018 – 3.00 p.m

Sweden battled their way past Switzerland in their round of sixteen tie, collecting a 1-0 win from the position of having kicked off as underdogs. They are proving to be a very tough side and that’s three clean sheets in four games at the tournament they have picked up. England came through an extended duel with Colombia in a testy round of sixteen tie, the Three Lions holding their nerve in a penalty shootout. This could be a long war of attrition between these two European sides in the quarter finals of the World Cup. It’s going to get tense. Read our Sweden vs England prediction for more details of how we think this tie is going to play itself out.

Who will win Sweden vs England?

There are two sides here who will have targeted the quarter finals as being a huge success for themselves ahead of the tournament. Now one of them will find themselves in the semi-finals. What an occasion this is going to be and Sweden are proving to be a very good, well-organised side and will face an England side who have yet to take a clean sheet. But the Three Lions do look the bigger threat of the two going forward. Who will win this Sweden v England duel? We are going with the Three Lions, but only just.

Sweden playing to their strengths

Sweden deserves a big pat on the back for what they have done at this 2018 World Cup because that not many people who would have predicted that they would be competing in the quarter-finals. They were third favourites behind Germany and Mexico to qualify from their group. They have shown tremendous team spirit throughout this tournament even though they are clearly not one of the more talented sides around. They play together so well that they become more than the sum of their parts. In their round of 16 game against Switzerland, Sweden were the underdogs for that game but pulled through with a 1-0 win thanks to Emil Forsberg in the second half. That was a strange game because it was expected to be really tight and cagey but there were a stack of chances at both ends which just goes to highlight the lack of quality that Sweden have upfront.

They missed some sitters along the way. That same profligacy could come back to haunt them in this game and Under 1.5 goals at bet365 is at 6/4 odds* (betting odds taken from July 4th, 2018 at 7:51 pm). Not since their big home win over Luxembourg in the World Cup qualifiers in October, last year have Sweden scored more than one goal in a game before they beat Mexico 3-0 in their final group stage match. Sweden do lack the punch up front and there three wins recorded at the 2018 World Cup are the only victories on the board in their last 10 fixtures. They have scored in each of their four World Cup games so far but we can see this one going down to the wire and our prediction for Sweden v England is for both teams not to score at 8/13 odds* (betting odds taken from July 4th, 2018 at 7:51 pm).

Three Lions have to stay grounded

After burying some World Cup penalty shootout demons with a success over Colombia in the last round, England were left on cloud nine in reaching the quarter-finals. But they have to quickly come back down to earth and get focused for what is going to be a tremendously difficult challenge against Sweden. Again it is not that Sweden are a great technical side brimming with individual talent, but they are so well organised and so hard to break down that England are going to have to show their degree of patience. England cannot afford for complacency to be creeping in at this point. Harry Kane is now up to 6 goals and he is leading the golden boot race going into the quarter-final matches and the Tottenham man is the 11/4 favourite in the first goalscorer market* (betting odds taken from July 4th, 2018 at 7:51 pm) with bet365. Just as we know what to expect from Sweden now, we also know what England are going to deliver. They will to get the ball down and bring out from the back and use what pace they have up front.

It has to be said that England didn’t create much from open play against Colombia because the service lines were just not there or Harry Kane. But England do continue to look a serious threat from set plays and they wouldn’t care if it all boils down to converting from a set play to win this game and put themselves in the semi-finals. England to win by a one-goal margin is at 12/5 odds* (betting odds taken from July 4th, 2018 at 7:51 pm) and that is one of our leading predictions for the Sweden v England game. England do have only one clean sheet in their last seven games and nine at the 2018 World Cup so far so that is one concern for them. They are playing with belief and energy but honestly, the quality isn’t always there from the Three Lions. Even though they have been struggling for clean sheets England have not conceded more than one goal in any game played since the beginning of September last year.

With them having scored in seven of their last eight games they have a great opportunity in front of them to book themselves a semi-final place for the first time in World Cup since the 1990 edition. Will they be able to crack the tough Sweden defence? The Three Lions have won two of their last three against Sweden, however, those are the only two wins in their last 15 games against them.

Sweden vs England Prediction

Sweden are going to take a lot to break, but England can come up with something to edge their way through. The Three Lions didn’t create too much against Colombia other than from set pieces and that is probably going to be their key to winning this one. Back England to win by a one-goal margin and nothing more.
