Ecuador Team Profile

They are going to be one of the relative unknown quantities at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and they make just their second appearance in the greatest tournament in the World. Their only prior appearances came back in 2002 when they failed to get out of the group stage, but then went better four years later in Germany and reached the last sixteen. That has to be a target this time around again, and they were effective enough during qualification, in their good spells at least, to perhaps grab themselves a bit of the limelight. They have been drawn in a competitive group where they could be in the picture to qualify for the knockout stage, going up against France, Switzerland and Honduras. They are not a side which are exactly blessed with household names, the stand out figure being Manchester United’s winger Antonio Valencia.

The thing about Ecuador, while they have generally struggled on the world stage (even on their own continent where they have failed to make it past the first round of the last five Copa America’s), have always had some good talent around. However, Ecuador is not a side which looks blessed with goals at the moment, so they are going to have to work hard in defence to keep themselves in the running.  La Tri sees their group as being manageable though, and will be looking to pay a tribute to former player Christan Benitez, who died at the end of July 29th. They do find wins hard to come by, having won two of eleven matches played in a run of form up to the beginning of March 2014.

They were strong out of the gates in CONMEBOL qualification but then fell away towards the end and only just scraped over the line thanks to goal difference over Uruguay, narrowly having to avoid going through a play-off to reach Brazil. They are going to need harmony and touches of brilliance from their key players, but a bit of enterprise and positiveness could see them push for a place in the knockout stage.

Reinaldo Rueda is a Colombian who has had experience of international management, with Colombia and Honduras. He took charge of Ecuador back in 2010 after stepping away from Honduras after failing to get them out of the group stage at South Africa 2010. He will have to try and nail down more consistency though, but the country will hope that his experience from the 2010 World Cup will be able to lead them past the group stage.

Ecuador Key Players

The big talent is in their attacking troops, notably with wingers Antonio Valencia and Christian Noboa. Valencia has been plying his trade well in the Premier League for a while now with Manchester United, an exciting attacking talent, who perhaps has never quite fulfilled all of his potential. The side will look for his influence though on the pitch, and they will try and feed him as much as possible, although they have just as much of a dangerous weapon in Christian Noboa, who plays in Russia with Dynamo Moscow. The thing about all of Ecuador’s midfield, is that despite some good talent there, there’s a distinct lack of goals. Valencia has just eight in 68 appearances for his country for example.

Striker Felipe Caicedo is part of a good young crop of players for Ecuador who is going to be their man source of games. The 25 year old has netted 15 goals in 47 appearances for his country in his relatively young international career. It is going to be how well he can link up with the attacking midfielders in the side which is going to determine the level of success that Ecudor can get at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The evergreen Edison Mendez and Segundo Castillo are going to be the experienced hands int he middle of the park.

It is a little tough to actually nail down a big strength of Ecuador, but judging by their qualification campaign from South America, it is probably going to be their defence. Only Colombia and Argentina conceded fewer goals than them during qualification. They are going to need all the composure of the likes of Walter Ayovi to hold them together back there come the group stage of the World Cup

A couple of big weaknesses for Ecuador are their lack of goals and their inconsistencies. Between September 2011 and March 2013, Ecuador lost just two of eighteen games and were racking up clean sheets all over the place. The bulk of those matches were in the World Cup Qualifiers. But then everything started getting disjointed, only managing to win one of their last six qualifiers. They are going to have to step their game up.
