South Korea – World Cup 2014 – Betting

South Korea

Manager: Hong Myung-Bo
Captain: Lee Chung-Yong
FIFA Ranking: 53
World Cup appearances: 8
Best World Cup: Fourth Place – 2002

South Korea Team Profile:

Despite managing to qualify for the World Cup eight times, they’ve only once made any real inroads at the prestigious tournament. However, in 2002 South Korea were the surprise package of the whole tournament and went on to defy the odds on several occasions when beating Portugal, Spain via a penalty shoot-out and then Italy in the quarterfinals to book their first ever Semi-Final appearance in a world cup. They unfortunately went on to lose both the Semi-Final and the third place play-off but the Koreans certainly left their mark on that tournament and they will be aiming to reach similar heights again at Brazil 2014 after falling at the round of sixteen four years ago in South Africa.

However, they may struggle after some slip ups during qualification and they only made it through automatically on goal difference over Qatar. So not thoroughly convincing or impressive and they certainly don’t look as strong as they were in 2002.

Hong Myung-Bo was the inpsirational captain behind their run to forth place in the 2002 World Cup, so is a hugely popular figure. He has worked his way up through the ranks of the national set up, starting with the South Korea U20’s and then moving on to the South Korea U23’s. He only took over as national coach in January of 2014 after Choi Kang-hee resigned at the close of qualification for Brazil 2014 after putting together such a disappointing campaign.

South Korea Key Players

Tough to pick out key players for South Korea because they chopped and changed so much during qualification and used so many different players that not many had a chance to settle into anything. Still, Hong Myung-bo has tried to put his own stamp on things in his short tenure so far, leaning towards the country’s youth. German based Son Heung-min is one of them. The young Bayer Levekrusen striker has netted 6 goals in 23 appearances for his country and should be the next big thing. But the estbalished goals of Watford’s Park Chu-Young and Lee Keun-Ho will be relied on the most at the 2014 World Cup. Bolton’s Lee Chung-Yong has taken over the captain’s armband for them at just 25 years old and will be a big,  experienced player for them.

South Korea Qualification for the World Cup

Sector: Asia
Group: 2
Position: 2nd
Win-Draw-Lose: 4-2-2
Goals Scored: 13
Goals Conceded: 7

World Cup Potential: 1/5

Despite the heroics of 2002 which saw South Korea reach the third place play-off, we can’t see this crop of South Koreans going any further then the group stage. They would need a very easy group in order to progress as they simply lack enough quality players, and should fall behind the ranking of Beliguam and Russia in their group. They may be able to get points out of Algeria but on the evidence of their qualification, it doesn’t look as if they will have enough to get far.
