It was far from plain sailing for Australia as they had to come through a couple of tense play off rounds in order to reach the World Cup 2018. But the plucky Socceroos will be heading to Russia 2018 and they are going to have produce their best to try and get out of a tough group.

How Australia qualified

Qualification was a struggle for Australia who competes in the Asian zone. They finished third in their group behind Japan and Saudi Arabia, meaning that they had to go through a play off against the third-placed team from the other AFC group, which was Syria. That was a tense, tense struggle as well, with the first leg ending in a 1-1 draw and Australia only edging through in extra time after another 1-1 draw at 90 minutes in the second leg. It was veteran Tim Cahill who got Australia’s winning goal in the second half of extra time.

Yes, the former Everton man is still going strong for his country. Qualification wasn’t secured with that win over Syria. What it did is put Australia through to face CONCACAF nation Honduras in the inter-confederation play offs, Australia taking a 3-1 aggregate win.

In the qualification group, they only managed to win five of their ten games and their issues really were all away from home. Four of their five wins were all on home soil, but their lack of ability to win enough games on their travels saw them miss out on second place to Saudi Arabia on goal difference alone. Australia’s only defeat in qualification came out in Japan.

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

Australia are underdogs in their World Cup 2018 group where they face up to France, Denmark and Peru. The Australians are 14/1 odds at bet365 to win* (betting odds taken on March 21st, 2018 at 10:44 p.m.) the group and qualification looks at tough ask for them. They get a tough opener against a French side who will be keen to land an opening blow in the tournament, kicking off as one of the favourites. So that is likely going to leave them with ground to make up right from the off.

Their second game against Denmark is not going to be easy either, not after the way the Danes stepped up to the plate in their World Cup qualifying play off against Ireland after having put together a really sold group campaign. Then the Socceroos round off against Peru in their final match and frankly that isn’t going to be a particularly easy affair for them. The Socceroos may well struggle to get more than a point on the board.

2018 World Cup odds*

Germany 9/2, Brazil 9/2, France 6/1, Spain 15/2, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 12/1, England 16/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 25/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 33/1, bar 40/1* (betting odds taken on March 21st, 2018 at 10:44 p.m.)

Australia World Cup History

The first time that Australia qualified for a World Cup was in 1974 when they exited at the group stage with just the one point from their three games. They had a long wait to get back to the finals as they didn’t return there until Germany 2006 when they made waves by getting out of the group stage and falling at the round of sixteen against Italy.

They made it back to the next two World Cup tournaments, failing to get out of the group stage in 2010 and in 2014 and so the Socceroos will making their fifth World Cup appearance as they turn up at Russia 2018. Their overall record in previous World Cup appearances is W2 D3 L8.

Australia Predictions

This is a tough group for Australia who are going to have to rely on a lot of grit to battle through. They do work hard but it’s hard to see just where the quality is going to come from to get them a win. It doesn’t look too likely to happen to them in their first two games, so their best chance will be against Peru, but the South Americans won’t be easy opponents. Anything better than a one point haul for the Socceroos at Russia 2018 would be somewhat unexpected. Either way they will probably be going home at the group stage.
