After their momentous run at Euro 2016, Iceland steps it up to the next level by taking on the challenge of a World Cup for the first time in their history. After stringing together a tremendous qualification campaign where they topped their group against the odds, no-one is going to be underestimating them at Russia 2018.

How Iceland qualified

Iceland won their group in the qualifiers, and it was a tough group as well for the large part against tricky opposition. In the end, Iceland topped the pile with a two-point advantage over Croatia and that was largely thanks to their superb home form, winning all five of their home fixtures. Everyone saw what they were capable of at Euro 2016 but no-one in the group could figure out a way to stop them. Iceland posted a W7 D1 L2 record over the course of their ten qualification matches and earned a clean sheet in half of those games.

They showed some great character along the way, holding their composure to land a crucial 3-0 away win in Turkey in their penultimate qualifier. They did what they are good at and rode their positive wave. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson was their top scorer during qualification slotting home the four goals for his country. They delivered and delivered well and it just raises the expectancy of them going forward to the World Cup 2018.

They have taken the status of plucky underdog to a whole new level and now they take a crack at their first ever World Cup. They are going into the tournament at 200/1 odds to win the thing outright* (betting odds taken on March 22nd, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.) which of course, is totally unrealistic. But can they make a big impression and get out of the group stage at the first time of asking?

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

Iceland won’t be unhappy at the draw that they have received for the World Cup 2018. Yes, they will be tasked with keeping Lionel Messi quiet in their opening fixture as they take on Argentina. That is going to be a tough game for them to get a win out of. But their real challenge them should start when they get to take on Nigeria and then Croatia in their final group stage match. Iceland are 7/2 to be eliminated at the round of sixteen with the group stage exit at 2/7* (betting odds taken on March 22nd, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.).

However, there is a good chance for Iceland to make some progress. Nigeria should not be a side that Iceland will fear as long as the European stick to their organised game plan that is a great opportunity for them to bag themselves three points and then look forward to a rematch with Croatia. It will be a rematch as they were together in World Cup qualifying and Iceland traded home wins with the Croatians and may be good enough for a point.

2018 World Cup Odds*

Germany 9/2, Brazil 9/2, France 6/1, Spain 15/2, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 12/1, England 16/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 25/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 33/1, bar 40/1* (betting odds taken on March 22nd, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.)

Iceland World Cup History

This is Iceland’s first ever foray into the World Cup. Their trip to Euro 2016 was their first ever appearance in the finals of a major tournament.

Iceland Predictions

The way that Iceland have progressed over the last couple of years would you put it past them getting out of the group stage at Russia 2018? However, there are two very difficult games ahead for them. They will probably lose their opener against Argentina, but you can see it being a narrow affair. If they collect a win over Nigeria in their second match that will give them confidence going forward to take on Croatia. Croatia are a very strong dark horse are the more likely ones to progress through. They won’t go down easily though.
