The qualification process for Russia 2018 was pretty straight forward for El Tri as they coasted through the CONCACAF Zone as group winners. With a combination of hard work and plenty of passion, how far can they go at the World Cup?

How Mexico qualified

The CONCACAF zone is one of the weaker ones and Mexico breezed through the process, winning the group by a five-point margin over Costa Rica. Along the way they only suffered the one loss which was a surprise defeat in Honduras in the final round of matches when they had won the group already. It was still a significant result though in the bigger context of things because it saw Honduras leapfrog the USA into fourth, meaning the Americans weren’t going to the World Cup.

Mexico went W6 D3 L1 in their qualification campaign taking four points off their two games against the USA and the same tally against second-placed Costa Rica. Frankly, Mexico were just head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. They took a clean sheet in five of their ten qualification matches while scoring sixteen goals. The thing about it really is that it is just too hard to judge, based on the level of competition in the CONCACAF, just how they will handle themselves against tougher levels of opponents.

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

Mexico will have a tough group ahead of them in Russia as they not only have to go up against the reigning world champions Germany but also Sweden who took out Italy in the qualification play offs. So with Germany in the group, it is unlikely that Mexico are going to break out and overcome odds of 5/1* (betting odds taken on March 23rd, 2018 at 02:10 a.m.) on them winning this group. It’s just looking unlikely that they are going to stop the Germans from doing that.

But what about the second place between themselves and Sweden? That would be a tough, tight call. Sweden finished second in their qualification group behind France, beating the French once in the group and then digging in to stop Italy in the play offs. If you take a long look ahead to the odds on Mexico’s meeting with Sweden on June 27th, there it is Mexico who are 6/4 favourites to win that show with Sweden out at 15/8* (betting odds taken on March 23rd, 2018 at 02:10 a.m.).

Mexico have to open with a game against Germany which will immediately mean that they are on the back foot and at a disadvantage in the group. Their second game is against South Korea which they have to target three points in, before getting that final showdown against Sweden which will probably settle who is joining Germany in the next round.

The Mexicans like to try and get on the front foot in games as with the likes of Javier Hernández, Carlos Vela and veteran Oribe Peralta they do have the potential of goals in them. However, they don’t look overly convincing at the back at all and the bulk of the Mexico squad play in their domestic league with only spattering of them plying their trade across Europe.

2018 World Cup Odds*

Germany 9/2, Brazil 9/2, France 6/1, Spain 15/2, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 12/1, England 16/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 25/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 33/1, bar 40/1* (betting odds taken on March 23rd, 2018 at 02:10 a.m.)

Mexico World Cup History

Mexico participated in the first-ever World Cup back in 1930 where they finished 13th. After a couple of tournaments away, they made it back in the 1950 edition where they had a group stage finish in that and in each of their following four World Cup appearances, before landing their best ever result with a quarter final finish on home soil in 1970. After a group stage finish in 1978, when the tournament went back to Mexico in 1986, again El Tri went to the quarter finals. Since the 1994 World Cup, they have exited at the round of sixteen in every tournament since. Their overall match record at the World Cup is W14 D14 L25.

Mexico Predictions

Assuming that El Tri loses their opener against Germany then there is going to be immense pressure on them to beat South Korea in their second game. That is a totally winnable match for Mexico which sets up nicely then for that showdown against Sweden in the final round of matches. With the pressure of the situation that is going to be a tough game to call, but Sweden are actually looking a pretty positive and strong side and are more likely going to be the ones to come out on top. A round of sixteen place may be a bridge too far for them this time. Mexico are 8/11 odds at bet365* (betting odds taken on March 23rd, 2018 at 02:10 a.m.) for a group stage exit.
