Morocco were comfortable through the final stage of qualification to reach the World Cup and they denied the Ivory Coast a spot in Russia. Four years ago there were only two African nations to make it through to the round of sixteen. Can Morocco progress that far? They would have to defy some heavy odds though because they have been drawn out in a stinker of a group.

How Morocco qualified

Morocco will have been pretty pleased with the way that they got to the 2018 World Cup. They were up against the Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mali in their Group C qualification campaign from the CAF. There are two rounds of qualification from CAF for the top-ranked sides, as they start in the second round. A total of 40 teams are at that stage and there are twenty ties, contested over home and away fixtures. The winners of those twenty ties go through to the third round of qualification where the nations are split into five groups of four, with the top team from each of those groups automatically qualifying for the World Cup and everyone else not making it.

Morocco were drawn against Equatorial Guinea in the second round and it was a tight affair in the end between the two nations, Morocco opening with a 2-0 home win in the first leg, before falling 1-0 in the away fixture. Still, it was enough to get them through to the next stage despite being one of the lowest FIFA ranked African teams entering the second stage (84th). Morocco were ranked 22nd in the CAF for the qualifiers.

So when they went into the group stage in the third round, they were facing the Ivory Coast, the second-ranked side in the CAF behind Algeria, as well as Mali and Gabon, ranked in the top fifteen. So Morocco were the lowest ranked side in their group so the fact that they battled their way through all of that to reach the World Cup is a testament to their spirit and the ability to overcome their status of the underdog.

Morocco opened their third round with back to back 0-0 draws against Gabon and the Ivory Coast before thumping Mali 6-0. They only managed a 0-0 draw in their second match against Mali but responded with a 3-0 win over Gabon. That left them will still some work to do though in the final round of matches as they had to go to the Ivory Coast and avoid defeat. They did more than that, they took a crucial 2-0 win, to go through their six matches without shipping a single goal.

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

A top two place is going to be a massively difficult thing for Morocco to achieve at the World Cup 2018. That is because they are up against the power of Portugal and Spain in Group B. So that’s going to take something extraordinarily special for the African nation to progress from that and they are 10/3 odds at Coral* (betting odds taken on March 29th, 2018 at 9:35 p.m.) just To Qualify past the first stage.

The biggest chance that they have of putting something on the board will come in their World Cup opener against Iran on June 15th. Whatever they can get out of that one, even if it is a point would likely be all that he would be going home with at the end of the tournament. Morocco are 5/4 favourites at Coral* (betting odds taken on March 29th, 2018 at 9:35 p.m.) to win that match at least.

2018 World Cup Odds*

Brazil 4/1, Germany 9/2, France 13/2, Spain 6/1, Argentina 10/1, Belgium 11/1, England 18/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 33/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 40/1, Russia 40/1, Poland 50/1* (betting odds taken on March 28th, 2018 at 9:32 p.m.)

Morocco World Cup History

This will be Morocco’s fifth appearance in the FIFA World Cup. Their first ever was back at Mexico ‘70 when they went home with just a point from their groups stage efforts. It wasn’t until Mexico were hosts again in 1986 that Morocco again made it on to the World Cup stage and that time they did better in getting eliminated in the round of sixteen. Then their back to back 1994 and 1998 appearances save them taking in the group stage.

So it has been a long journey back to the World Cup for them and their World Cup record stands at P13 D2 D4 L7

Morocco Predictions

Six clean sheets in six games in their final qualification group suggest that they could at least make things a little tricky for their opponents in the group. However, you have to weigh up the level of opposition they were up against and none of it was as good as Portugal and Spain are going to prove to be. Also, Morocco failed to score in half of those qualifiers too. Morocco are 1/7 odds on* (betting odds taken on March 29th, 2018 at 9:35 p.m.) to be packing their backs in the group stage.
