The Super Eagles will be gracing another World Cup after coming strongly through their qualification campaign.
Of the five African Nations making their way to Russia 2018, only Morocco are ranked lower than Nigeria are.

But that won’t stop them believing in themselves and putting themselves about in their group.

How Nigeria qualified

The top CAF Nations all enter at the second round of World Cup qualification in their Confederation zone. Going into that second round of action, Nigeria were ranked as the 10th seeds in the draw. They were paired up with Swaziland for their tie and Nigeria come through that with a 2-0 aggregate, both goals coming at home in the second leg to put themselves through to the third round which is the group stage.

They had a really tough group stage draw as well having to take on top seeds Algeria as well as 6th seeds Cameroon there, with Zambia making up the numbers. Things took a strange turn in the group though as Nigeria came out firing winning their first three games, taking convincing victories over both Algeria and Cameroon as well. That just set them up so well to give them something to play for down the back strength.

Even though they got penalised for fielding an ineligible player in their final group match against Algeria (with Algeria subsequently being awarded a 3-0 win), it didn’t stop the Super Eagles winning the group with a W4 D1 L1 record. Underdogs Zambia finished second as Cameroon and Algeria just didn’t deliver.

World Cup 2018 Group Stage

The Super Eagles are going to need to get best out of their top players like former Chelsea man John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho. So they have some quality in their group. They have a tough challenge ahead of them as they take on Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in Group D at Russia 2018 and each of those opponents will bring something different to the table.

Nigeria opens against Croatia on June 16th and they are the 18/5 underdogs with bet365 for that one* (betting odds taken at 7.30 p.m. on April 24th, 2018). Croatia are a very good technical side and Nigeria could find themselves doing a lot of chasing the fixture. Next up for them will be Iceland, who impressed so much at Euro 2016 and in World cup 2108 qualification. They will probably be targeting that game with the most realistic prospects of producing a win.

So they will be a rugged team that Nigeria will have to try and figure out how to play against and then comes a big challenge as they face up to Argentina in their final group stage match. That’s no easy one either for the Super Eagles who will be underdogs for that one and considerable ones too. Nigeria are 11/2 at bet36* (betting odds taken at 9.33 p.m. on April 25th, 2018) to collect the victory in that one. So there is just a tough battle all the way for them and getting out of the group is not going to be easy. They are 14/5 third favourites to qualify* (betting odds taken at 9.33 p.m. on April 25th, 2018)

2018 World Cup Odds*

Brazil 4/1, Germany 9/2, France 13/2, Spain 6/1, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 11/1, England 18/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 33/1, Croatia 33/1, Colombia 40/1, Poland 50/1, bar 100/1* (betting odds taken at 7.30 p.m. on April 24th, 2018)

Nigeria World Cup History

The first World Cup that Nigeria feature in was USA 1994. They completed the job of getting out of their group as well in that first attempt and then did exactly the same four years later in France. They posted an identical W2 L2 record in each of those two World Cup appearances. They made it three World cup appearances in a row when they went to the 2002 World Cup where they tanked badly picking up just one point in the group.

It was worse four years later as they didn’t even manage to qualify. But they were back for the 2010 edition where they only managed a point from their three games again. But four years ago in Brazil, they did manage to pick themselves up and get into the round of sixteen and that was following through group winners Argentina, so will history be repeating itself as they face up to the Albiceleste once again?. That was as far as they got though as they were brushed aside fairly easily by France in the first knockout stage.

Overall Nigeria’s record at the World Cup is W5 D3 L10 from five previous appearances.

Nigeria Predictions

They have some key players that they will turn to for experience but this is such a difficult group to get out of. Argentina haven’t looked particularly great to be fair but you would still expect them to occupy one of the qualification spots. That would leave then a duel between Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia. Frankly, Croatia have a decent chance of winning this group and are likely to progress, so a stage of elimination wager on Nigeria for 1/3 odds* (betting odds taken at 7.30 p.m. on April 24th, 2018) looks the most likely outcome.
