Sweden World Cup 2018 Betting – Odds, Group & Prediction
Sweden were the ones who broke Italian hearts in the World Cup qualifier play offs. They produced the goods when it mattered and they held their own in the group stage as well in what was a difficult contest with France and the Netherlands to duel with in there. Now, what tricks can they pull out of their hat at the 2018 World Cup? They may be a little underestimated.
How Sweden qualified
So the Swedes were charged with a tough challenge to get through qualification really. They have not only the group favourites France to contend with, but the Netherlands as well who were going to be a potential threat. Bulgaria, who qualified for Euro 2016 were also knocking around there too. It was a tight battle for the second spot as it turned out behind France, but along the way, the Swedes dig land a good home win over Les Bleus.
Sweden posted a W6 D1 L3 record in their group campaign and it was their home form which was strong. They went unbeaten on home soil, beating the French as mentioned and picking up a point against the Netherlands when they came to visit. The Swedes lost away to both of those and it left a tight finish between Sweden and the Netherlands going into a final couple of matches in qualification.
Sweden had a three-point advantage over the Dutch with two games to go, and all that Sweden needed to do there was win their penultimate match to at least sustain that three-point lead. That was always going to be enough because they had a vastly superior goal difference to that of the Dutch so it didn’t matter then if they went on to lose their final group match, which was against the Dutch.
That was exactly what happened. Sweden smashed Luxembourgh 8-0 in their penultimate game, invoking their goal difference over the Dutch by six. That was so important for them and it meant that even though they lost their last qualifier in Holland, they made it into second place at the expense of the Dutch as they had a +17 goal difference to that of the +9 that the Netherlands had. That 8-0 result against Luxembourg really was the key. Then it was on the play offs where they faced Italy in another tough challenge. After landing a 1-0 home win in the first leg, they dug in with all they had out in Rome to land a 0-0 draw to get through.
World Cup 2018 Group Stage
What awaiting the Swedes at the 2018 World Cup? A competitive group is what. They have gotten a pretty tough draw in the sense that top spot probably is not going to be up for grabs from the very off. That is because Germany are there and the reigning World Champions are the favourites to win Group E. Sweden are priced up at 15/2 odds at bet365 to win the group and that is actually putting them as third favourites. Why? Because of Mexico, who the bookmakers think have a farer chance of getting through then the Swedes do.
There is little doubt that the game between Mexico and Sweden is probably going to decide that at the end of the day. That is in the final round of group matches too so it could be a pretty intense game that one, which is on June 27th. Sweden open with a good game against South Korea and they are going to have to come out of the blocks and land a victory in that one to keep the pressure on Mexico (who faced Germany in their opener) right from the get-go.
It means that Sweden may afford themselves the luxury of just playing for a point when they go up against Germany and you would have to imagine that the Swedes are going to be better equipped at dealing with the Germans than Mexico are going to be. Sweden have had a far tougher qualification campaign against quality side than what Mexico have done. If Sweden can get themselves four points out those opening two games they will be doing well.
Then from reading the situation they can adapt themselves going into that game against Mexico knowing exactly what they have to do. So really they aren’t a bad option to seriously consider at 6/4 odds with bet365* (betting odds taken at 11:38 p.m. on April 12th, 2018) to qualify from Group F.

Sweden World Cup History
The Swedes have a pretty rich history in the FIFA World Cup and their first appearance was in the second ever tournament in 1934. They finished eighth on that occasion but things got better for them in the next couple of tournaments as they finished 4th in 1938 and then third in 1950 in Brazil. After skipping the 1954 edition, they came back with a bang in 1958.
Sweden made it through the Final of the 1958 World Cup which was on home soil for them. However, they couldn’t deliver the goods in the final itself as they were taken down by party poopers Brazil. That remains Sweden’s best ever finish at a World Cup and their best effort since then was a third place in USA ‘94.
After appearing in the 2002 and 2006 editions of the tournament, exiting at the round of sixteen in each of those, they missed out on qualification for the last two editions. So this is a big moment for them to get back on the World stage. Overall their World Cup record is W16 D13 L17.
Sweden are a confident enough and capable enough side to go through the group stage successfully and a 2/1 odds price at bet365 on them for a round of sixteen exit is stacks of value. If they could make it through in second place behind Germany in the group then it would probably mean that they take on Brazil in the round of sixteen. Still, getting out of the group, defying the bookmaker’s odds would be a big effort from them.Place your World Cup Bet at Bet365!
